Hunting
for Black Bear
The black bear season here in Alberta begins in early April but due
to the environmental conditions, the bears do not become really active
until after the first week in May. That is when we begin our hunts as
there are black bears everywhere!

 |
Draw baits
are utilized in wildlife management unit 526 and wildlife management
unit 359 for bow hunting black bear. These areas are world renowned
for off color bears. These wildlife management units or wmu's
border the north and south shores of the Mighty Peace River and
the British Columbia border to the west.
Hunts for black
bear with a bow are very exclusive as we take a maximum of four
hunters per year in each area. We employ approximately 10-14 baits
per 4 man group. I guarantee no hunters have utilized baits prior
to your hunt.
If you are looking
for a unique color phase of the black bear these wmu's have shown
from our previous bear harvests, that approximately 50% are colors
other than black. Color phases from a creamy blonde color to a
rich chocolate brown are common. When hunting over draw baits
you will be sitting in one of our new and safely constructed tree
stands. You can expect clear shots from between 15 to 20 yards
to the target. |
Myself
or one of my experienced guides will accompany two hunters to
the baits. Once the hunter is safely seated in the tree stand
the guide will leave the immediate area and return just after
shooting light.
Bait hunts in
wmu 359 and 526 have had sightings of 4 to 8 bear on one bait,
this is not uncommon. This kind of bow hunting over bait provides
shots from 10 to 20 yard range. |
Rifle
Black Bear Hunts |
|
Our rifle black bear hunts are conducted in wildlife management
units 356, 355, 445 and 524. These hunting areas are great for black
bear and home to a small population of grizzly bears. Due to Grizzlies
residing in this area there is no baiting allowed for black bears.
This makes for some of the best spot hunting for black bears in
Alberta.
We
hunt black bears from tree stands, pickup trucks or on foot. Black
bears are found in abundance on clover patches, along old logging
roads and on the banks of the Smoky River. On average we see 10
to 30 black bears per hunt! Bears shot, on average, are approximately
6 ft. in length and weigh approximately 300 lbs.. Some black bears
over 7 ft. are taken each year. Success rate is 100% on the first
bear and 50% to 90% on the second bear. Shots can be expected
from 60 to 150 yds. A 30-06 caliber and larger is plenty big for
black bear.

As
there is no baiting in these areas so we can pass the savings
of baiting costs onto the hunter. A six day hunt is only $3,000
U.S. funds plus tags. You can harvest two bears on your license
and there is no charge for the second bear. For an additional
$500 U.S. funds plus the licence fee you can add wolf to your
trophy hunt.
Handicapped
hunters can be accommodated. All hunts are two hunters per one guide.
If you would like one guide per hunter for the six day hunt this
will cost $3,000 U.S. funds plus tags. Single hunters are welcome;
we can team you up with another hunter. A maximum of four hunters
in camp at one time, ensures a quality hunt. We only take four hunters
in each area per year, this ensures that this area has not been
hunted by us the previous weeks.
Please
feel free to contact any or all of my references located on my photo
page. Bookings can obtained by e-mailing Derrel Johnson at mpoc@telusplanet.net. |
Black
bears can be hunted in the spring or fall. We also offer combination black
bear and mule deer hunts. This is a great combination hunt and very economical
at only $4,800 U.S. funds plus tags. This gives you 3 Alberta animals,
two Black bears and one mule deer at a great price.
Advantages
to spot to hunting verses baiting:
- Spot hunting areas are not over hunted.
- The hunter can hunt all day, over bait we only hunt evenings.
- The hunter can see a lot more country while looking for a great bear.
- Cost of spot hunting is much cheaper because the costs associated with
baiting is eliminated.
We
only have a few hunts left for this upcoming season. If you would like
more information on these or our archery hunts over bait just give me
a call or drop me an e-mail. I will be happy to answer any questions you
may have about our hunts.
